Oliver didn’t need x-ray vision to imagine the shocked look on her face at his words.  He waited a few moments, giving it time to sink in before continuing.

“I’d never heard so many Italian swear words in one sentence,” he said as he wryly reminisced.  Nonna’s a tiny thing, but she physically pulled me off the hooker and barely gave me time to pull up my pants before marching me out of there, leading me out by the ear and cursing me with every breath.

“She got me home and launched a fiery tirade, demanding to know why I was so determined to throw my life away.  I didn’t say a word until she said the sentence I was waiting to hear:

Santa Maria, if your parents could see you now…”

“That’s what I’m banking on!” he roared.  “Where are they, huh?  What are they doing that’s so important that they’ve forgotten I exist?  “Why aren’t they here, Nonna?  Why??”

Because they’re DEAD!” she screamed, tears streaming down her face.  “They’re dead, Oliver.  They’re gone, and they’re never coming back, and you have to accept that or you’re going to drive yourself crazy.”

“NO!” he screeched, grabbing a heavy crystal vase from the table and smashing it to the ground.  Nonna sobbed as he screamed and cried and destroyed everything he could get his hands on, finally interceding and grabbing his wrists when he began smashing his bare fist into the wall.

“I think I wanted to feel something stronger than the pain that was threatening to consume me inside,” he said quietly.  “Anything had to be better than what was happening to my heart at that moment.  I actually welcomed the physical pain; it was distracting, but not enough.

“I remember collapsing to the floor, and Nonna just holding my hands while I cried my heart out,” he said.  “I just sat there and cried for over an hour, finally accepting that I’d never see my parents again, that they would never see me again.  They’d never see me graduate high school, go to college, meet my girlfriend, see me get married, know their grandchildren…”

He paused, the pain still there but somewhat dulled by time.  “I told Nonna that I was all alone in the world, and I was scared.  She put her arms around me and promised to always be there for me, but it came with a caveat that I get my life in order and become the man that Robert and Laura Queen would have raised me to me, a son that would have made them proud.”

He stopped and listened, hearing the sound of sniffing from beyond the door.  Chloe was crying again, but for a whole different reason, it seemed.

“I wasn’t calling you a slut, Chloe,” he said softly.  “I would never think that of you, ever.  I just…I know what it’s like to bottle grief inside, and how self-destructive it has the potential to be if it isn’t properly handled.  I wanted to spare you from that, stop you from making the same mistakes that I did, and I’m deeply sorry if I’ve offended you.”

No answer from the other side.  Oliver exhaled deeply and rose from the floor.  He’d taken two steps towards the spiral staircase when the door behind him creaked softly and opened.

He turned round and saw Chloe standing there, her small form clothed in a robe that must have been hanging on the back of the back of the bathroom door.  Slowly she stepped out, wiping her eyes as she walked towards him.

He quickly closed the rest of the gap between them and wrapped her in his arms, gathering her as close as he could.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured, kissing the top of her head.  “I’m so sorry.  Are you okay?”

She nodded against his chest.  “I’m fine,” she replied in a small voice as she lifted her head and looked at him.  “You?”

He smiled at her honest hazel expression, warmed by the fact that in the midst of her own pain she still found room in her heart to worry about him.  “I’m good,” he said, stroking her hair.  “I’ve been okay for a long time now.”

She nodded, then her expression turned to one of aghast as she spied the bright red handprint on his cheek.  Her hand came up to cradle his jaw lightly.

“Oliver, I’m so sorry…”

“It’s okay, I totally understand,” he replied, holding his hand over hers and turning his face to kiss her palm.  “It’s okay.”

She stared up at him, her eyes full of uncertainty.  “Are you sure?”

He nodded with a reassuring smile.  “I’m sure.  You don’t need to worry about me.”

Except that he liked her worrying about him, he realised with a start.  Because of his affluence and position in society, everyone looked upon him as The Guy with Everything; no-one ever stopped to think about his own needs.  Lots of women were happy enough to attend to his physical needs, sure; but nobody ever spared a thought for the state of his heart.

Except the woman in front of him, who’d practically dragged him out of the gutter without even stopping for a thank you.  The woman who’s hand he was still caressing softly.

The woman who was now stroking the small of his back with the tips of her fingers, making his body react with more than just a physical need.  He lowered his head and tilted her chin upwards with his other hand…

Just as his business phone buzzed loudly from downstairs, jerking them both back into awareness.

Oliver swore softly and pressed his forehead against hers, shaking his head as the phone innocently continued to ring.

“Damn it, I have to take that,” he said apologetically.  “It’s the QI line, and they only contact me if-”

“…it’s really urgent,” she finished, saying the words with him.  She patted his chest and smiled.  “It’s okay, I don’t mind.”

He returned her smile and gave her fingers one last squeeze before heading down the stairs to retrieve his call.

***

She’d had no idea he’d gone through so much heartache in his young life.  It had never really occurred to her to question how he’d coped when his parents had died.  Oliver was such a strong, self-sufficient individual that it was difficult to accord him with any vulnerability.

Losing one’s parents at an early age was bound to have a lasting effect on anyone, but not being able to grieve, to have to live with the torturous hope that maybe, by some twisted miracle, they might still be alive…

She leaned on the balcony and studied the man talking authoritatively on the phone, and sighed.  She could understand the grief he’d had to live with.  It was something she herself struggled with everyday, something she confronted with every visit to her mother when she spoke animatedly to her about everyday things, praying for some response, any response from those vacant eyes.

It never came, and she knew deep down that it would never come; but it never stopped her hoping that maybe someday, medical and scientific breakthroughs would be able to unlock her mind.

But Oliver would have gladly had a catatonic mother than no mother at all.

She closed her eyes and held back tears of empathy.  Her heart ached for the scared, lonely child who hadn’t had a chance to say goodbye to his family before they were taken from him.

She schooled her expression and smiled dutifully as he bounded up the stairs towards her, noting with a twinge of disappointment that he’d put his pants back on and the t-shirt was on its way back over his head.

“That was the Star City office,” he explained as he reached her.  “A situation has arisen at there that I need to personally take care of, so I’ll be flying out as soon as I leave here.”

She nodded, already feeling a vacuum within because he was leaving.  “Anything I can help with?” she offered.

“Not unless you can chair about seven board meetings, no,” he laughed, taking her hand.  “But thanks for the offer.”

“How long will you be out there?” she asked, mentally cursing as her mouth moved faster than her mind.  He didn’t owe her that; she wasn’t his girlfriend.  Sternly she reminded herself that they weren’t in any kind of relationship, conventional or otherwise.  He’d only been on hand to help out a friend in need; he’d said it himself that it was just payback for saving him.

“Three days at least; probably a week at most,” he answered, oblivious to her inner recriminations.  “But we’ll talk more when I get back, okay?”  He squeezed her hand and stroked her hair, and she nodded.

“Okay.”

“Good.”  He stared at her briefly, then pulled her to him and kissed her hard, one hand going around her waist, the other anchoring her head gently.

By the time he lifted his head, she’d forgotten all the reasons why she’d been planning to stay detached from this man.

“I’ll see you soon,” he whispered, stroking her cheek.  “Take care, and be strong.  I’m only a phone call away if you need me.”

She nodded.  “Thanks for all your help, Oliver,” she said shyly.  “I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me.”

He grinned.  “Anytime.”  He ran down the stairs and out of the double doors, and she took a deep breath, exhaling slowly as she thought of the monumental changes that had taken place in her life in the last twelve or so hours.

This whole thing with Oliver had been completely revealing.  And in more ways than one, she though to herself, smiling.  It had been a shock to discover that underneath that toned, golden exterior was a very generous heart and gentle spirit.  His methods were…unconventional, to say the least; but he’d certainly helped her heal.  She hadn’t thought about Clark since yesterday, and the pain that usually sprang up in her heart whenever he was on her thoughts was nowhere to be found.

A slow smile spread across her face as she made her way down the stairs.  She truly was free.  There was a whole world out there for her to discover, and Oliver had pretty much unlocked the door and opened it.

She couldn’t wait to step out of the shadows and into the sunshine.

Our now: Beauty in the Breakdown IV – Falling In

Commenting part 1 and 2, lol AGAIN

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah post the cont already!!!

Oh Dee, this is just perfection, so natural, so REAL. I totally can imagine react kind like that after their first time, because wanting or not, the thought that she had sex with Oliver, her Oliver, her friend and partner and some hour before she never thought they would find each other on that position, its like everything sink in. She totally was on fire like him after their first kiss on Warrior and their first tie def had to be EPIC to them, because they really like it, LOL, but the awkwardness def had happen, of course after that moment, she just felt right... and let it go, Ollie made her feel more powerful, cared, desired, loved (even she don't wanting admit that)

about this second part, awwwwwn the way you explain Ollie's loss, about his parents and do everything to get attention and believe that they will come back, has a huge parallel with Chlollie moment right now, I even made some comparitions before in my posts, so was great see that.

Part 3

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn I LOVE Oliver...... *_____________*

POST THE NEXT CAP, PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASE.

We all love Oliver, ha ha!!! :-D

Thanks for your lovely comments, queensil!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

This was perfect and now every time I listen to these song I'm going to think of you and this story!!! Adding to my Rec list hehe :-D

Angsty!

Chloe's reaction in the second part was exactly as I would imagine it to be -- regardless of where she's at in life, to me, she's not the type of character to accept the idea that someone's having sex with her because they think she's easy or because they offer themselves out of pity (which, to me, is kinda worse).

I know that Oliver is offering himself because he truly cares for her and wants her to feel good about being with somebody. I don't think she would ever do what he did when he was younger but I think he's helping her stop her own type of self destruction, which is loneliness, reclusion, and mistrust.

Looking forward to the next part :)

How could I have forgotten to reply to this comment for nearly three whole years????? :-O *smacks self in forehead*

I do apologise, Gwen, and shall set about in rectifying this grave error.

"Angsty!"

Funny you should say that...I'm now on Part 10 of the series, and currently on another angsty part. Must be kismet!

"Chloe's reaction in the second part was exactly as I would imagine it to be -- regardless of where she's at in life, to me, she's not the type of character to accept the idea that someone's having sex with her because they think she's easy or because they offer themselves out of pity (which, to me, is kinda worse)."

Oh, she took it SO hard. After everything else she's had to deal with, to think she was being used was a huge blow. She completely misunderstood Ollie's motives, but it all became clear when he explained everything to her.

"I know that Oliver is offering himself because he truly cares for her and wants her to feel good about being with somebody. I don't think she would ever do what he did when he was younger but I think he's helping her stop her own type of self destruction, which is loneliness, reclusion, and mistrust."

Exactly. Having been there before himself, he's well aware of where such self-destruction could lead. His methods of therapy are...Well, unconventional...but they achieved the desired result (and a lot more, as the subsequent parts have shown!)

Thanks for your awesome comments, Gwen, and once again, my sincere apologies for such a long delay. :-)

I knew that man was awesome for a reason. Three cheers for Oliver for saving the day. You know, I have watched smallville for a long time now and i must say of all the characters there, it was Oliver who touched something in Chloe that really touched on who she is. The same way Ollie was able to reach inside the real chloe here

Geez, that was deep Jediyoda *---------* I totally agree!

Oh God... that was intense... really, really amazing... Congrats...

Dee...wonderful follow on to previous chapter - superb job :-)

when Oliver was a little careless in his phrasing about why her and the resulting smack as a result had me wincing both at his response (my first thought being ouch Oliver she is definitely not going to like that!)...and the fact that it was gonna hurt (a womens fury an all that)

with your summary on lots of angst i then found myself thinking halfway through this oh no this isnt going to end well is it?l..Dee wouldn't do that to us though would she?.......and I did find myself hoping that they would find a way back even just to friends.....then the rabbit out of the hat and oliver talked about the closest and most personal subject to him :) now smiling at this point my fear was eased....they were going to be ok even just as friends.....

Loved it!!! thank you for taking time to write *hugs* and with your update a couple of more stories to come (yay - clapping)

"Dee...wonderful follow on to previous chapter - superb job :-)"

Thanks, Sarah - and sorry for replying so late!!! :-O

Poor Ollie, it just came out wrong, and Chloe completely flew off the handle! :-(

Oh, they'll be a lot more than 'just friends' by the time I'm done with them! ;-)

"Loved it!!! thank you for taking time to write *hugs* and with your update a couple of more stories to come (yay - clapping)"

Always a pleasure, hun! *cuddles*

Wonderful. I loved how you explained his reasoning behind his action. It is truly beautiful. And very great not to leave us hanging :D

Oh honey, if I have it, I post it. I don't mean to leave all those evil cliffies, I really don't; but I can only write so fast! :)

So glad you like it!

love love love....OMG love it haha...awesome work Dee

AWESOME new chapter hon! *cuddles you*

*cuddles* Thank you! :-)

Well... If Chloe ain't gonna say it yet, I sure will! I LOVE you - okay that may be a bit much but this was all kinds of awesome.

You have the characters down perfectly. From the loneliness and the deep rooted issues, it's all there. It felt all so natural and flowed very easily. I like the awkwardness, actually I welcome it. I always feel cheated whenever TV - writers fail to acknowledge the fact that there is indeed a morning after!
Then again when I read you story I'm kind of thankful that the Smallville writers left this huge gap for you to fill and for us to enjoy.

Anyway, I loved it and I can't wait to read more of this series. I was lucky enough to find all three chapters posted when I came home so my apologies if I didn't comment on the others two chapters. ;-)

"Well... If Chloe ain't gonna say it yet, I sure will! I LOVE you - okay that may be a bit much but this was all kinds of awesome."

Squee!!! Thanks so much, luv you too, babes! :-)

BINGO. If they're going to write an onscreen relationship, then they should commit to it and follow through, not skip all the important milestones and head straight for their first fight! Hear that, TPTB? ;-)

"Then again when I read you story I'm kind of thankful that the Smallville writers left this huge gap for you to fill and for us to enjoy."

Hey, they gave me lemons, so I just did what I could with it!!! :-P

"Anyway, I loved it and I can't wait to read more of this series. I was lucky enough to find all three chapters posted when I came home so my apologies if I didn't comment on the others two chapters. ;-)"

Oh, no worries, babes. I'm just glad you enjoyed it! ;-) *hugs*

Wow!!! I really love this series! You're doing an amazing job with it and I'm dying to read more!

It's such a blast writing it, hun. So glad you're enjoying it! :-)

Awww yay! I read this and the last chapter all in one go :) So good! ooh when he said what he did, I cringed knowing exactly how Chloe was going to react to it. I'm glad she listened to him when he explained everything. You nailed them so perfectly, to the deep issues they both have, its nice to see them awkward and out of sync at times. Well done! I love this story and the series is amazing! I cannot wait till the next story! Well done!

What I love most about Chlollie is that they are both flawed, but they are also both strong on the inside. Where one is weak, the other is strong and vice versa, so they overlap and complement each other perfectly.

So glad you like it, Nienna. Thanks for commenting! :)

Wow! That was just so beautiful! That was a complete surprise to have Oliver reveal so much about himself and about his parents dying and how he handled it. I love the way he saw Chloe going the same way and doing the same thing. She was grieving and he was right she probally would find some random guy and use him at that point so it was better that that person was Ollie someone she knew and cared about her. Fantastic job as usual!

Thanks, hun! It was great to explore the depth of Oliver's feelings and how he developed following the sudden loss of his parents.

Glad you liked it, and sorry this is coming so late! :-)

OMG Dee I'm just literally in AWE here!!!!! OMG THIS was just WOW and SOOOOO AMAZING!!!! :D I LOVED it!!! You did SUCH a BEAUTIFUL job, it was just SO Awesome and Brilliant and Amazing!!!! :D Your writing of Chloe and Oliver, and their relationship is just Amazing!!!! :D This was just SO sweet, funny, Hot, heartbreaking, yet also Beautifully touching!!!! :) Again, WOW!!! :D I definitely LOVE and ADORE this series, and Can't Wait to read more!!!!! :) Amazing job hun!!!! :D

Amber, honey! *huggles*

First of all, my apologies for replying this so late. Second of all, I *heart* this comment so much, and I'm so glad you like the series! :-D

Thanks so much for commenting! :-)

Gahhhh another amazing part of this story. I'm so in love with the way you write these two lovely souls. I felt so bad for Oliver when he told about his loss and I could almost feel Chloe's humiliation when she thought that Oliver had used her. You are a master when it comes to writing Chlollie (and Chlark I may add) and I can't wait to read the next installment in this marvelous series..:)

*blushes* Saurina, your praise makes me soar! :-)

I'm so pleased you like the series. Sorry this reply is coming so late, I completely forgot I had some reviews I hadn't responded to!

Hope all is well! *cuddles*
